Cyclone Montha
Cyclone Montha, a severe cyclonic storm that formed over the Bay of Bengal, made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast near late on October 28, 2025. The landfall process began around 8:30 PM IST and completed by 2-2:30 AM IST on October 29, lasting about 5-6 hours due to the system's slow movement. It has since weakened significantly and is now a deep depression, expected to further degrade into a low-pressure area within the next 6-12 hours as it moves inland. Impacts and Casualties • Human Toll: At least 1 death reported—a woman in Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district killed by a falling palmyra tree during gale-force winds. Two injuries noted in initial reports. • Evacuations: Thousands evacuated from coastal areas; over 2,000 relief centers opened in southern Odisha districts. In Andhra Pradesh, 3,778 villages were on alert, with vehicle movement suspended in 7 districts overnight. • In Visakhapatnam district (which covers Anakapalli region), evacuation and preparedness are well underway: about 9,290 people have been accommodated in shelters in the district. • Schools, colleges and shops have been closed or remained shut as a precaution in both districts. • Damage: o A wall collapse in Visakhapatnam's Malkapuram area; fishing boats damaged in U. Kothapalli mandal. o Widespread power outages, uprooted trees, and fallen electric poles in coastal Andhra Pradesh. o Heavy rains (up to 50-52 mm in Visakhapatnam) caused flooding in low-lying areas. • Transportation Disruptions: o Trains: Multiple cancellations and delays by South Central and South Eastern Railways, including 9 from Visakhapatnam and 1 from Bhubaneswar. Restoration efforts underway post-landfall. o Flights: All 32 flights from Visakhapatnam Airport cancelled on October 28; partial disruptions in Chennai and Bhubaneswar. o Roads: Blocked by fallen trees, at Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam,Yanam, Katrenikona, Tuni, Manginapudi Beach etc. • Fishermen are advised to avoid seas until October-30. • Fishers along this coast are already stopped fishing from last one week into sea operations • Anchoring of boats and suspension of fishing will impact on their livelihood Grama Swarajya Samithi Visakhapatnam
